Garden Update - Late Spring 2025

Outdoor Garden

We set up the last garden bed that we didn't get to last summer. We purchased our third two-pack of the 6x3 beds last year and only set one of them up. I prepped the bed with cardboard and threw in some limbs, leaves, and grass clippings. I then topped it off with soil.

We also did a bit of planting. Our larger bed has mint and tarragon on one side. They are healthy plants and come back every year, so I like to leave them alone. We planted a few flower seeds in the bare spots on this side. We planted dry beans on the other side using beans I had saved from a previous garden. The seeds are a couple of years old, so if they do not come up within a reasonable time, I will re-plant with newer seed. We also planted two of the shorter beds. This gives us four beds that are ready to go for the season: one of strawberries, two we just planted, and one with tarragon and mint on one side and the beans we just planted on the other. We will plant the remaining beds when the weather warms again.

We also erected our easy-up fencing. If you follow our blog, you know that our tulle "fencing" was looking worse for the wear after three years and many wind and snow storms. On the recommendation of a neighbor, we were considering installing a motion-activated sprinkler to deter pesky critters. After giving it a lot of thought, however, we decided to go with the easy-up fencing option because we know it works. I tried ordering some inexpensive tulle from Walmart.com, but after placing my order, they sent an email claiming there was a pricing issue (I think they listed the wrong price) and canceled my order. Feeling frustrated with Walmart, I got on Amazon instead and found some great tulle for the same price (approximately 50 cents per yard). Even better, there were so many color choices. I chose Hunter Green. It blends in well and looks much better than the white and cream we had in previous years. It took all 40 yards to enclose the beds the way I wanted, so it worked out just perfectly!

Indoor Garden

Our indoor greenhouse is doing well. We have harvested a lot of greens already. The parsley, basil, and tomatoes are growing well. The tomatoes have already started producing buds, which I have clipped in an effort to get the plants to grow taller. We will keep you updated on this fun, productive project!

Greenhouse Installation

We are so excited to have a greenhouse this year! Some friends were getting rid of theirs, so my husband drove to a neighboring state and picked it up. Our sons installed it, and it is now ready for our plants that love warmer weather. Since greenhouses are new to us, we are experimenting with it this year. We are planning to use it to help extend the growing season of our plants that like warmer weather. This year that will include tomatoes, ground cherries, and garden huckleberries that we will plant in containers. We may try planting some cool weather crops later in the summer to see if we can get a harvest from them as well.

If you have any tips on growing in a greenhouse or ways to maximize your greenhouse usage, we would love to hear them! Please post any tips for us and our readership in the comment section.
