Backstory
Our family really enjoys coffee. We have a small selection of methods to make coffee - both electric and non-electric. We have an electric coffee maker, a French press, an AeroPress, and a camp stove percolator. We enjoy grinding our beans for the freshest coffee, so we have a couple of options for that as well. Our electric grinder is a quality hand-me-down from a favorite cousin. Our hand grinder was a gift from me to Husband one year. I did a lot of research to find a nice, durable grinder with metal parts that could be taken apart and cleaned (this 1Zpresso grinder is the updated version of the one we have). We are satisfied that our coffee-making options are pretty well covered. Our only challenge is that coffee beans don't store well for long periods of time. What to do in case of a long-term emergency?
Several years ago, we made our first purchase from My Patriot Supply. They carry quality freeze-dried and dehydrated foods in addition to a wide variety of preparedness gear. We were looking to have a few items on hand in case of emergency - whether financial, environmental, or other. When they came out with Franklin' Finest, a coffee that has a shelf-life up to 30 years, I was intrigued. This seemed like a good option to have "just in case." I purchased some (they have a great sample size), but we didn't try it out. As much as we enjoy coffee, our crew is not a fan of instant-style coffee. For this reason, we put off taste-testing the coffee.
Fast forward to 2025, when after many years of being a customer, we finally tried Franklin's Finest "survival coffee." Below is a short review of what we found:
Product Review
After trying only one cup, Franklin's Finest has become our go-to quick coffee option. It is by far one of the best instant coffee options we have tried. Husband even keeps a pouch at his office for the times when he needs just one, quick cup.
The taste is smooth and almost creamy, with slightly nutty tones. I usually like to add "extras" to my coffee, but this is so smooth, I can drink it without milk or honey. We were expecting it to be bitter, like so many of the instant coffees we have tried, but we were surprised to find that it does not have that bitter after taste. It is quite delicious.
The price is reasonable. The regular price for their sample pack (at the time of this writing) is just over 16 cents per serving. The #10 can comes to just over 11 cents per serving, and the bucket with 12 pouches works out to just over 17 cents per serving. With the frequent sales they offer, you can often find these options for even less. All in all, the price is worthwhile to have a quality shelf-stable coffee, whether you are looking for a quick cup on the go or something to add to your long term emergency preparations.
It's value really can't be beat. Coffee beans may get stale and the oils turn rancid over time, making them a poor choice for long-term storage. Franklin's Finest coffee doesn't have these issues when stored properly. We appreciate the versatility of options. We take it camping, use it with a hot pot at the office, use it as emergency keep it as a back up should we run out of coffee, and store some in our long-term preps. For an emergency coffee that can last up to 30 years, this coffee definitely offers great value for the price.
