Healthy Snack Series - Freezer Snacks
For those who have what is currently coined an "ingredient household" (a.k.a. low-tox, natural foods, "crunchy," healthy, etc.), snacks can be a challenge. This is the first in a series on healthy snack ideas.
We recently had a request for more snack recipes for those who are trying to provide healthy food for their families. We did a blog post featuring healthy snack options a while ago. Now, we want to focus on bringing you a wider range of snack options that includes links to recipes. We have spent some time searching the web to find recipe ideas to catalogue for easy reference.
Our first series post features frozen snack options. Although summer is not yet here, these frozen snacks can be enjoyed any time of the year. Here are a few ideas for freezer snacks you can prepare ahead of time to have on hand to satiate your hunger in between meals.
- Easy Frozen Jello Popsicles - We discovered that using gelatin in our popsicles kept them from tasting watery and also kept them from melting as fast. While we used boxed jello in the past, we now use unflavored gelatin mixed with fruit juice. In case you are unsure about using unflavored gelatin, here is an easy boxed gelatin popsicle recipe that will get you started with homemade popsicles.
- Healthy Frozen Gelatin Popsicles - If you are hesitant about experimenting with unflavored gelatin and fruit juice, this recipe has the instructions and amounts already done for you!
- Frozen Smoothie Popsicles - We discovered that smoothies frozen into popsicles made great treats. The kids really loved these when they were young. The yogurt keeps the popsicle from becoming watery and there are so many flavor options! We didn't really use a recipe, we just made our favorite smoothie, poured it into the popsicle molds, and froze them, but we have added a recipe link here for your convenience.
- Frozen Yogurt Covered Blueberries - We haven't tried these, but they look like a great and easy idea. This would be tasty done with raspberries or chunks of strawberries as well!
- Frozen Yogurt Fruit Cups - A simple, but frozen, version of fruit cups.
- Frozen Grapes - This one requires no recipe. Simply wash your grapes and put them in the freezer for a different and colder variation of this fruit.
- Frozen Bananas - Like grapes, bananas can easily be frozen. Peel and slice bananas into easy-to-hold pieces. Slather the top with peanut or almond butter, sprinkle with coconut, chocolate chips, chopped nuts, or flax seeds. Freeze. Serve frozen.
